Apple fucking watch strap game is on fucking point.

I am a fucking terrible writer.

Gruber is very wrong about Qi not being wireless. It's like saying that Bluetooth isn't wireless compared to GPS simply cause the range is comparatively short.

>I’m not doing so well on predictions lately, but I feel like it’s a safe bet that the next generation Apple Pencil will be able to charge via AirPower. Maybe the Magic Mouse and Magic Trackpad too, since your desktop is a perfect place to put an AirPower. This could even explain the ungainly location of the Magic Mouse’s Lighting port.

Hopefully that gets built into the iMac's baseplate.

My Optional Name:
That notch is annoying as fuck. I accept that they can't be rid of it entirely, but I'd wager that Apple will give up on "embracing" it with iOS 12.

Gruber is a prime example of inertia. He hasn't written anything good in over a year, yet here we are again.

He's like the DEC of pundits: the brain is dead, the body lives on.

Gruber the Booger:
This was incredibly painful to read.

Booger, did you not have time for a better comment? I think Grub raised some interesting perspectives even if I don't agree with his opinions.

And now, such an in depth article once a month and Mr. Gruber would be woth his money.

What he missed is that the Apple Watch 3 is the next step towards a no-iPhone future.

With everything in the cloud and bluetooth attached to you, you suddenly don't need an iPhone unless you want to use apps or take pictures. It's a miracle of the highest order.

I thought people managed to get the Apple Watch charging with the Motorola smartwatch Qi charger?

Grubweiner:
> you suddenly don't need an iPhone unless you want to use apps or take pictures

So, basically you still need your iPhone for nearly everything. The problem is that the watch screen is too small..... that is a difficult problem to fix.
11:27 am — Friday, 15 September 2017
Grubweiner:
I absolutely loved the part of the keynote where that guy was banging on about how they crammed all the new Apple Watch features inside the watch, and you could absolutely see he was building up saying "but it's still thinner". And then boom... it was THICKER. By 2 sheets of paper, but thicker. Ouch.

No, if you just want the smallest, smartest phone possible get an Apple Watch 3 LTE.

It's the next step towards not having a phone at all, which is what Apple has been moving towards forever: invisible computing.

Siri still has a way to go, but with that unstructured data purchase Siri should be able to start searching the unstructured data pile for actual answers instead of using her lame keyword-natural-language-AI.

Legion of Bad Ideas:
They should try making it a bangle instead of a watch. More space, more battery, more screen, better antenna.

that's all great, but i can't see doing banking or something with a watch. humans are visual creatures, and i think we always will be. invisible computing might be great for getting a quick answer to something, but if i'm booking a flight, i don't want a list read to me and then i choose an option. i want to be able to see everything.

"The last perfect iPhone was the iPhone SE. I’m not saying the iPhone SE is the best iPhone. I’m just saying it’s the last one that is perfect in design. No camera bump, no notch, perfect back, perfect front, perfect sides, every button feels nice and is well located."

Hey grubs, the word you should have used is not "perfect" but "flawless". That'll be 1000$ for copywriting consultancy.

"I’m not doing so well on predictions lately"

Well, maybe you should talk to people and be *informed* rather than be a fortune teller. What an insane concept.

the camera bump & screen notch don't bother me nearly as much as the continuing lack of a notification led.

i'd pay a hundred dollar premium for one, fer realz.

> Apple Watch and the AirPod case are not Qi devices — you cannot charge them on a Qi charging pad.

Apple is [launching the charging AirPods case in December](https://www.macrumors.com/2017/09/14/airpods-wireless-charging-case-december/?utm_source=feedly&utm_medium=webfeeds "AirPods Wireless Charging Case Rumored for December Launch at $69 - Mac Rumors"). Why would they start selling it before AirPower if it only works with AirPower?

Hairy Lime:
@Legion of Bad Ideas, unfortunately the watch still requires a iPhone to connect to anything. They didn't mention it during the keynote, but the small print on the Apple site spells out the requirements.
11:57 pm — Friday, 15 September 2017
Legion of Bad Ideas:
"Apple Watch Series 3 (GPS + Cellular) requires an iPhone 6 or later with iOS 11 or later. Apple Watch and iPhone service provider must be the same. Not available with all service providers. Roaming is not available outside your carrier network coverage area. Wireless service plan required for cellular service."

So you need a phone to set up, but after that goodbye iPhone? That'll get fixed at some point, just like you used to need a computer to activate the iPhone.

The thing I want to know is "how did apple get the carriers agree to have two sim cards going to one number." The one sim/one number is/was a core tenet of the cellphone system as it stood before today.

Catfood: you'd pay $100 for a notification LED?

You know you can set the camera LED to flash on notifications? It's part of the accessibility settings.

RTFM, why don'cha?
