"Whether this goes through or not, one thing I’ve been thinking is that if Apple does do a car, it ought to be a beautiful car."

Tim Cook should be paying Gruber for these insights. Although I would add that personally, I've always thought if Apple makes a car, it should be a good car.

No. McLaren does not make drop-dead gorgeous cars. Stop trying to rationalize a potential Apple purchase.

They make amazing machines with near-unrivalled technical prowess with prices that only the 0.1% can afford.

Weird. I thought you were telling us, [only recently](http://daringfireball.net/2016/09/design_as_branding), that design is how it works and not how it looks, according to some idol of yours.

Guess I was mistaken about that.

This is weird, isn't it? How is McLaren going to help Apple build anything for the mass market? I know Tesla went with a Lotus-based sports car for their first product, but that was a different time, when most people didn't believe an electric car could be any better than a golf cart. Tesla needed needed to make a high-performance car to prove a point. But it's not 2008 anymore – people know that electric vehicles can be awesome.

I understand Apple wants to make a good car... but McLaren? It just seems like overkill.
