What are you trying to keep private, John? Why all the secrets? My mind is racing at the connotations!

Fucking idiot.

Gruber isn't an idiot on this one. Fuck Google.

FUCK GOOGLE

Hans Gruber:
Google fucked up here.

They should just put up a dialog box the first time you launch the app;

"Send information to Google to help improve this application

Yes or No Thanks"

Selecting "No Thanks" should automatically turn on encryption.

@Hans Gruber

That approach would break smart replies for anyone you were chatting with. Given that the AI stuff is the whole USP of Allo, that would be a problem.

Yes, Yes... Apple good, Google bad, "muh PRIVACY!" etc. etc.

As for 'Incognito' vs. 'Private', what a bunch of B.S. If anything Gruber should be calling out both companies for giving people the false impression that browsing sessions conducted in these modes are either of these things.

"they should be called “private tabs”, like Safari does"

We truly are in the world of satire.

Umm, Grammar correction, John:

>they should be called “private tabs”, like Safari does be called its tabs.

Also, check out my new blog [Ill-conceived Fireball](http://daringfireball.net/2016/09/design_as_branding#comments#comments) – I haven't thought it through!

i think it's more about google over promising, and under delivering, as per usual. yet no one gives a shit - when they announce all their big ambitions, everyone is impressed, and the stock price reflects it. when they backtrack, no one seems to care.

Wow, for once everyone is siding with Gruber and I'm not.

I'd buy his anti-Google posturing if I didn't see this in his site code:

<!-- Google Analytics -->
... etc ...

If he really believes in keeping Google out of people's private lives, why does he use Google Analytics, one of the most intrusive things Google's makes?

I believe your sincerity on this topic but you need to walk the walk, Gruber.

Hateful BB-8:
Markup removed my copy and paste of his code. View the code and search for analytics. You'll see he's using Google Analytics on his site.

To Be Fair:
Gruber claimed on one episode of The Talk Show (related to the iOS ad-blocking thing, possibly with Marco Arment as guest) that he would be removing Google Analytics from his site.

Of course, he has also said that he should go back through the DF archives and fix broken links.

Odds of either thing happening: 0.00%

Privacy and Google's business model are antagonistic. I hope that anyone who really needs privacy will realize this and choose another way of sexting.
