The balls on Gruber The Shill to be pointing out someone else's "conflict of interest" like this.

Off The Verge:
From the full article: "Second, the circumstances of Chris' departure from The Verge raised ethical issues which are worth disclosing in the interests of transparency and respect for our audience."
transparency=covering our ass
respect=fear and loathing

He wasn't an on-site employee, obviously. He didn't go into the office in New York or the Vox D.C. office. It's likely he was a 1099 contractor. If you're an employee you can't disappear for a month or two: They'd be at your door if you didn't show up for two days straight.
A 1099 contractor would get paid by the article, or sometimes by the billed hour. Any more supervision or control than that risks trouble for the company.
It sounds like he didn't want to leak his new workplace, and he kept up minimal, social contact via email and Slack.
Check the jobs and carreer pages for The Verge and Vox going way back: They don't really hire writers as employees, only editors (except for a core staff at Vox.com). This is pretty standard these days (MacWorld, etc.: Bye bye staff writer jobs).

Gruber's interest in this is amusing, considering that he counts MG Siegler among his buddies.

To add: not for the similar name (just dawned on me) but for MG's conflicts of interest over the years.
