>I’m just pointing out that if true, it’s the most un-Apple-like project in the company’s history.

So that whole Mac clone thing never happened. Power Computing, Umax, Motorola, et al, must've just been figments of my imagination.

Yep, Apple has never done this sort of thing in its entire history.

To me, the fact that Apple seriously thought about building a fucking car is the most un-Apple-like thing about this.

I know exactly what he meant, which is why I pointed out that he's wrong.

@Donarry:

The difference is that the Mac started as an Apple made line, then was licensed to third parties in a period of business desperation.

Starting out licensing a platform to third parties, when the company is thriving, would be like nothing Apple has done before\*. It may or may not be a good business decision, but Grubes is right; it is un-Apple like.

\* The ROKR might seem to come close, but Apple did not, to my knowledge, license an entire OS to Motorola. Instead, they partnered with them to make a device compatible with iTunes libraries. Partnering with third parties to make compatible peripherals is something Apple—and every computer maker—has been doing for a long time.

This doesn't sound like Steve Jobs' Appe, but it sure sounds like Tim Cook's.

Why does Apple have to be first with this? They weren't the first phone manufacturer.

Let the industry play out, and you know there'll be suppliers with the tech to license. Then, if you really think people want an Apple-branded car, put it together with pieces of the stack (much like they did with OS X when it came out, or what they do with certain components of the iPhone).

After ROKR, Apple realized that it needed more control than normal carriers would give. That's why it went with Cingular at first, because it was the only carrier that would accede to Apple's demands.

Look at CarPlay. Is it successful? Not really, and it's not even core to the car. Someone licensing a self-driving Apple brain? I find it hard to imagine that a car company wouldn't want that as part of its IP portfolio.

Tim Cook should be fired. He's the worst thing to happen to Apple. The man has killed Mac, pro apps and has completely missed the AI train.

Just fire him already!

@anonymous:
By all means. Fire Tim Cook for not building businesses around all these things his competitors are losing hundreds of millions of dollars on with no profit in sight.

You can fire Tim Cook, but who would you replace him with?

Do you have a Steve Jobs clone waiting in the wings?

I don't think Cook is doing a great job – he lacks vision, focus and taste – but his Apple is still producing tech (usually) better than its competitors and it continues to print money. There's no appetite for a Cook ouster.

Apple's getting rich off its cash cow... that SJ created.

Apple reminds me of MS when Gates left. Ballmer is an idiot who was collecting huge checks from Win/Office and also managed to almost destroy the company.

Who will be Apple's Nadella I don't know... but they need someone to replace this idiot they have currently. The man has wasted 5 years and Apple has fallen behind in everything of importance.

Next 5 years of Apple's future will be tumultuous. Their phones will be pretty but will be dumb as shit.

It'd be great if someone leaked that Apple University stuff that people talked about before Jobs died.

That said, the fact they fired everyone in the car division is a good thing. At some point you have to make a go/no go.

What's bad is they had to call Bob out of retirement to do that. I mean, who the fuck was running that division?

What's even worse is that they hired OVER 1,000 PEOPLE and only now they figured out they can't make it work. 1,000 people!

That says it all about what kind of an idiot Cook is.

Nadella - the guy that shat all over MS's mobile strategy? The guy that kills MS's platforms? He may seem like the guy who knows what he's doing, but currently he does only harm to the company. Xbox, Skype, Windows Phone, Hardware (Nokia), desktop Windows - everything is getting fucked.
