Gruber, you are right. Wow, haven't said that in a while.

Users expecting everything to be free or 99¢ are the problem.

Quality content costs money. Or it will be littered with ugly ads. Or not exist at all.

The App Store model has reduced our appetite for paying for good content.

>...a game this good, and this high profile...

1. It's not particularly good

2. Why should "high profile" have anything to do with how it is rated?

Whether it should or shouldn't is irrelevant, the fact is that it does.

That said, Gruber seems to miss the point that being a high-profile, highly anticipated game does bring out more whiners, just like with the NES Classic selling so well that Amazon consumers gave it one star because it sold out too quickly.

I wonder if it would have been better if Nintendo had simply priced the game at $10, and did not offer a free version.

Aside from solving the family sharing issue, this would prevent entitled brats too cheap to pay for the game from leaving negative reviews.

This wouldn't work for most games in the App Store, but it could work for Nintendo. Nintendo, and this game in particular, has the name recognition, so if anyone can pull it off, they could have.

>It’s an embarrassment that a game this good...

The game is a piece of fucking garbage. It's a simple, shitty runner that does nothing new for the genre other than being Mario, and like most runners isn't fun in the least.

>...and this high profile, has such terrible reviews because it costs $10.

So almighty Nintendo lays an egg not worth $10. Get the fuck over it. The game is trash just like almost every other runner.

The game sucks. I played the free portion and then deleted it.

Game is great. 40 million downloads doesn't mean much unless a lot of those people convert to the $10 model. Once those numbers come out, we'll know if this worked or not.

Since journalism has devolved into listening to the vocal minority, I expect the iTunes reviews of less than 1% of downloads to be the deciding factor on how successful this game is.
