To Be Fair:
Why is that "a real doozy"?

9to5Mac really ran with the Reddit post and even "confirmed with a source with knowledge of the plans" that the app was no more. Then they made a few conjectures on the move and the rationale behind it.
It's one thing to be wrong but rarely I've seen a site with at least some history of breaking news being that wrong in confirming a fact "with a source with knowledge".

Woah. Someone was wrong on the internet???

Reminds me of that time Grubs posted a political thing that wasn't true.

What 9to5Mac has done was quite different. They weren't just wrong or posted something that was wrong, instead 9to5Mac claimed to have independently confirmed the rumor with "a source".
Gruber has done the "confirmed with a source" a few times, for instance when [he refuted the iPad 2 would have a Retina display](http://daringfireball.net/2011/01/cold_water_ipad_retina_display) and he was absolutely correct.
Not only that the 9to5Mac article expanded their thoughts based on the false confirmation. It's not a huge gaffe but rather odd to see a site that actually has had some legitimate story breaks previously fail so badly.

@elbowroom got it. Someone was wrong on the internet. I will mark the occasion on my calendar.
Anyone breaking stories is going to get calls wrong sometimes. This time their 'source' who confirmed the rumor turned out to be wrong. It's not like these types of sites are just making shit up, whole cloth. They're all relying on sources.
The fact that it's surprising that they got one completely wrong speaks more about their generally good track record than it does about this particular incident.
When was the last time Gruber stuck his neck out at all?

Safer to never break any news at all, like gruber here

No. They did *not* break the story, like you said they *confirmed* the story with their "source".
If they broke the story it'll be not unusual but in this case it's odd the site claiming to confirm it with a source getting it so wrong because they were simply going by that Reddit post.
>When was the last time Gruber stuck his neck out at all?
I already linked it above. Gruber confirmed the iPad 2 won't have a Retina display when the internet was buzzing with the rumor. He turned out to be absolutely correct. I believe him and Jim Dalrymple have perfect records when it comes to confirming or denying rumors with certainty.
