Airpods are overpriced because they sound like garbage. They are one size fits all. They let in far too much ambient noise.
>He makes a strong case that Apple Watch is underpriced compared to its competition, too.
Yes. We should all be paying Apple more. Be thankful Apple are so generous. Kiss the ring Johnny boy.
Next article from Gruber we are going to hear about what a bargain a 3 year old Mac Pro is.

THE CURIOUS STATE OF DARING FIREBALL SPONSORSHIP PRICING

Apple once again cannot estimate product demand or ramp up effectively. Or it creates demand by artificially limiting supply. Either incompetence or malice, take your pick.

To Be Fair:
That's a weird definition of "wireless headphones." There are loads of models on the market for $50 or less.

The AirPods and the cheapest Apple Watch are definitely priced more aggressively than usual for Apple. Also the AirPods has so much more polish in its user experience that I just can't move back to other Bluetooth headphones. It's probably one purchase that unexpectedly gave me most enjoyment in recent memory.
On the other hand Apple has been also assertively upping the average prices for the iPads and the iPhones, so you can see a pattern here.
More on the AirPods, I'm not sure if Apple luckily or deliberately made a product that fit a niche no one else filled. For "wireless" Bluetooth earphones, it seemed initially competitors such as Samsung wanted to make health tracking wearables but they just didn't perform as well as general headphones compared to the AirPods. Also others are all in-ear types which are great for noise reduction but not so great if you want to listen to what goes on around you at the same time.
Also a reminder, just because something is cheap, it doesn't mean it carries low margin though. The first Pebbles carried margins higher than the Apple Watches even though the Pebbles were cheaper. Then again it's not a surprise when you use one. I do have the Pebble Time and despite its strengths, it's hard to get over how cheap it feels as with the display's terribleness.
