gruber doesn't quite see the irony. facebook is dominating because they are more focused on building products people want than making sure everything is perfect in every way before rolling out. you know, exactly the opposite of the way vesper was thought out.

Flying Fuck!:
The fucking fuck-faced fuckwads at Facebook don't give a shit about an extra 40MB of resources—and neither do the fucking Llama humpers that use the app.

Gruber the booger:
>At least 40 MB of resources are duplicated. Imagine how much collective bandwidth and storage Facebook is wasting here.

Why imagine? Like a child.

Just do a little rough back-of-the-envelope estimate.

40 MB of waste X 1 Billion downloads = 40,000 TB

At $50 for a one TB drive that storage cost is roughly $2 million.

Fuck it, lets multiply by a factor of 5 just to be safe.

There is no doubt that $10 million is insignificant to a company like Facebook.

John your fake outrage is once again misplaced.

Imagine the time wasted by people using this very website, trying to get it to resize properly on a mobile device.

Is $10 million insignificant to a company like Facebook?

$10 million far exceeds the cost of the dev effort involved to maintain efficient binaries.

It's a decent lesson for smaller companies, too, concerned about app download speed and it's affect on conversion.

But your analysis is exactly what one would expect from a blogger charging $8000 a week for sponsorship...

This hardly matters now, and would hardly matter at all if Apple wasn't so stingy with capacity in its ultra expensive hardware

Binary size matters beyond storage space and download size. It's not just Apple's stinginess on SSD capacity.

>> The version 87.0 is now available: 253 MB on the same iPad Air 2 with only 64-bit code. In just 6 months, the Facebook.app size grew by 88 MB!

In related news, the download size of macOS updates continues to be missing from the Mac App Store Updates tab, but frequently exceeds a gigabyte for a minor point release, which means you can easily run your mobile data plan into the ground just to get a browser security update. Apple seems to think we all have fibre connections to the Internet. Neither Linux nor Windows are this gluttonous for bandwidth.

Perhaps you could direct some of that influence you have over Apple to getting this noticed, John? Then you can worry about an oversize iPhone app from Facebook, who after all really don't give a shit as long as people are stupid enough to use it.
