Doesn't change the fact that you're using Facebook, or that they're requiring Facebook.

And shit, if step one of using a service is "make a fake social media profile" then that's a failure. Why the fuck should I do that?

Do they give gold stars for being pedantic?

Then don’t. Jesus fuck.

One thing to remember is that Facebook already owns his "data".

All his friends who uploads their phone contacts allows Facebook to build a detailed profile of him.

*...plus forking over a huge trove of personal data. *

how does registering a fb account for the sole purpose of using getaround entail 'forking over a huge trove of personal data' (that they don't have already)?

sincere question. maybe it does in some way i'm not considering.

the real problem is that it's becoming a de-facto standard.

People will think you're weird or have something to hide if you dont have a facebook account.

Then services you actually need with require you to have one, just like you are required to have a bank account if you want to have a job.

These services that are essentially required to have to live are provided by private companies who might be all nice now, buy who knows who will end up owning your data in 10, 20 yrs time?

And credit agencies never share how they score you so if they believe a genuine person has to have some kind of account on FB with x-amount of posts etc.. How will you know why they have failed?

FB needs to be regulated as it becomes pervasive. In fact all social media with upwards of 250m users should have government involved at board level and some regulatory oversight which is punishable by prison if they fuck up (i.e. lose data, sell it to some dicks somewhere etc..)

I don't think people really understand where this is all going..

@catfood:
You are not providing them with any more data that they don't already have but now they have your agreement to an end user license.

The agreement might allow them to collect more information that they wouldn't legally be allowed to collect without an agreement.

'Getaround sucks'

The word 'sucks' is misogynistic and homophobic since it refers to fellatio:

This seems to be a regular thing from the left now - Stephen Colbert's talk of cock-holsters etc. Their opinions are merging with those of ISIS.

I bet Gruber is the kind of guy who cheered Reagan's death, but said the celebration of Bin Laden's death was unseemly. And didn't see anything weird about that.

Jesus Christ. The hyperbole about how terrible facebook is (particularly from Twitter users!) drives me nuts. It's like anti-vaxxer conspiracy theorists or anti-GMO crusaders. There is literally nothing facebook can do that isn't somehow interpreted as nefarious by huge swaths of the twitter-media-industrial complex. And yeah, I get that this is more about a third party REQUIRING facebook and that being annoying more than it is about facebook itself, but even so, that's only an issue because there's so much baseless (or highly exaggerated) bullshit fear mongering about facebook that you wind up with people who seem to LITERALLY think that merely creating an account is tantamount to compromising their entire existence. At this point they're so invested it's hard to know where the pretension ends and the ignorance of the service begins, but it's so fucking tiring hearing them drone on with their out-of-date misconceptions about the service and breathless hyperventilating about how evil it is—when many of them have literally never even used it. Which is a point of pride for them of course. But they're so confident and proud of their ignorance, and how "pure" they are, that they're oblivious to how ignorant they sound to people outside of their facebook-hating bubble.
