To Be Fair:
Does it matter? I don't think Microsoft intended the Surface Laptop as something that people would actually buy and use.

"Hi Nick, I have alcantara on my 996 GT3's steering wheels, gear knob and hand brake. It looked like the pics you showed of the gts however it was merely dirty, I gave it a thorough clean with some warm water and a terry towel and it's all as good as new. It actually wears really well as I have as 85k km's on the clock. Cheers Mark"

Softer a few thousand miles of sitting on my Surface the Alcantara will have worn away?
That's it. I'm not buying one.

I want a Surface upholstered in rich Corinthian leather.

No, it will become shit after a week or too, since it all depends on hand contact.

You don't need to know what alcantara is like in cars to know how bad of an idea this was, just look at Microsoft's own [Surface Ergonomic Keyboard](https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/surface/accessories/surface-ergonomic-keyboard). A couple people in my office have them. After about 3 months there were clear, worn-down spots where their palms are resting. Easily replaced since it's an external keyboard... but is Microsoft planning on offering resurfacing options on those laptops? Doubtful.
