Not a baseball aficionado, but what is wrong with observing the other team's signs and making use of that knowledge? Surely it's been going on forever, and everyone does it.

I agree, I never liked this rule. To say you can't look at something that's right there on the field for everyone to see is ridiculous. If your hand signals are getting "stolen" then come up with better schemes to change them up, obfuscate, etc.
