1. Do you defend Ciccariello-Maher's tweet: "All I Want for Christmas Is [sic] White Genocide" or "Abolish the White Race"?

2. Would you defend a professor saying "Abolish the Black Race"?

4. If the anonymous white dudes who sent Drexel "threats" are indeed anonymous, how do you know they are white?

5. Can anyone point to the value that Ciccariello-Maher offers to the students of Drexel as an instructor or the academics as a researcher and intellectual?

6. Do you understand that "Academic Freedom" is not a right, but a conditional privilege granted by this private university to its faculty?

7. Aren't you worried that the academics like Ciccariello-Maher are endangering the necessary role of the university in our society but polluting it with pseudo-academic disciplines, and politicizing their scholarship and teaching?

Statistically, there is no relation between white masculinity and mass killings.

But he'd have to be a real academic to understand that.

So if a mass shooting happens in Africa it's because of black masculinity?

If a mass shooting happens in Latin America is it because of hispanic machismo?

If dogs kill other dogs is it due to canine masculinity?

When white blood cells attack and kill migrant bacteria is it genocide? Or just racism?

Who is this guy again?

It must be tempting for people to project their own prejudices onto current events.

Take a step back and remap their argument to penguins or ducks and see if it still makes sense.

"Mass killings by penguins are a result of penguin masculinity."

Huh?

Take homosexuality, for example. All kinds of animals practice homosexuality. Are homosexual penguins an affront to God because they're homosexual?

Occasionally ducks rape dead male ducks. Does that mean that gay rape and necrophilia are due to some human condition? Or did ducks learn their behavior from watching humans?

"The professor sounds like a joke, but it does appear to be true that the right is just as prepared as the left to stifle speech when it suits them."

The problem with this argument is that this guy is a balls-out racist. White genocide?

But many of the profs on the other side - people like Bret Weinstein - are academics talking about well established research that just happen to not fit the woke narrative. Like that of biological sex differences, for example.

Now, you can argue that all sex differences are the result of culture. You'd be nuts, but it's an argument (and an increasingly fashionable one). But to put these profs into the same box as this hate-speech spewing maniac is not reasonable.

I just don't understand what Gruber is doing these days. He updates so rarely, and when he does he usually just links to political articles with little to no commentary of his own. He completely ignored the big Google event (even though he liked the original Pixel and said it was the best Android phone), and he's way behind the curve on breaking Apple news. There's still no responsive or mobile version of the site, which is almost unheard of in 2017, and this makes the text hard to read on mobile browsers (especially since Chrome prompts me every single time to create a readable mobile version). I've really enjoyed Gruber's commentary on Apple for many years, but we get so little of it now that I'm probably going to stop checking this page.

Not that he owes this to anyone, but it would be great to get some kind of update from Gruber as to what he's working on these days instead of this blog. He must have some new project that's taking all his time.

good thread. one thing i'd add is that this guy is not a liberal.

liberals should not be put in a position of feeling forced to defend him lest they be painted as right-wing.

this guy is the antithesis of liberalism.

gruber is setting a cowardly, shameful example here.

It's defending speech you may not agree with. It's pretty clear from the linked tweets that the guy is not a liberal.

There was a recent incident with students shouting down and ACLU representative bacause the ACLU "would have defended Hitler". It is perfectly consistent with being a liberal to call those students a bunch of dumbasses, even though they would claim to be liberal.

gruber isn't defending the guy's right to free speech.

he's whining because he believes the guy is on his side and then made a zero-sum calculation that his side lost this round because ciccariello-maher was placed on leave.

what do drexel and the students enrolled there gain from having ciccariello-maher in the faculty?

replace "white" and "black" with many of the things he's said, and you'll find a klansman by any other name.

he's free to be a racist. and the school is free to release unqualified faculty.

That's difficult to reconcile with the first tweet Gruber linked to:

Would Gruber not think this applies to him?

> > and the school is free to release unqualified faculty.

It kind of is. Drexel's tenure policy is pretty easy to find online. The relevant reasons for termination are:

(a) grave misconduct;

(b) termination for cause that is related directly and substantially to the fitness of the faculty members in his or her professional capacities as an instructor or researcher;

where the AAUP policy documents provide the definitions.

Anyone with kids or has travelled to the third world know that violence against others isn't a white thing, it's a people thing.

If you stay in your liberal bubble it's easy to forget that not everyone in the world is a nice, polite white person. There are people out there that will gut you for your cellphone, then sell your body parts and clothes. They don't care if you're white, they care if you're rich and stupid.

In fact, liberalism is really the ultimate in white privilege. Only a rich white person would think that everyone is nice, polite, and well-behaved and expect everyone to be the same.

John, I love your writing. But politics is a disease. It's everywhere we look these days. I come here to escape this kind of garbage. Don't contribute to this country's illness. I work in higher-ed. Higher-ed is broken these days. There's no substance, and it's not even respectable or worth a dime anymore. Just please stop.

If we wanted political commentary, we could look almost anywhere else and find lots of it. If Gruber wants to get into the political writing game, he has to do much better than this. He has to examine a topic in detail, make phone calls, and attempt to add something to the already-overwhelming conversation. His lazy Apple commentary model does not transfer over.
